In Houston:
Yes, it's hurricane time again. If you've already made plans for an evacuation, good for you. But, have you made plans for a pet evacuation? Katrina/Rita evacuees who were petowners know the difficulties and heartache that can come without a plan in place. So, as you are gathering your "Get Out Of Town" kit, assemble your pets', as well:

Donna Linsley with
Flying Free Equintherapy also wants to remind horse owners they need to be
prepared to move their precious cargo, as well. She writes:
"I know it took two trailers two days to get all the Flying Free horses out before Rita. If we hadn't planned ahead we would have really had a major problem. If owners can't get the horses out of town, at least look for a high secure pasture, free of debris, where they can be turned loose. They will likely fare better left free in a safe pasture than locked in a barn that could flood or be destroyed by high wind. Shots should be up to date and a contact name and number can be painted on their rumps with greasepaint. Also be aware that some areas will prohibit horse trailers on the road after a mandatory evacuation has been called, so if you can move them, do it early."

Also for rescuers:
www.petfriendlyshelters.org The volunteers for Charlotte and Sarasota Counties in Florida have developed a national website for information on emergency preparedness for pets and their people. This site will link to organizations, government, weather and news content relevant to emergencies throughout the United States.
There are areas for local, regional and national services to post links and information so there is one central location for people to get information on ANY emergency relating to pets. The national release for the website is scheduled for June 7th.
The address is www.petfriendlyshelters.org
I ask anyone that has emergency related web content, PDF flyers or any other information to please email me directly so we can get the information out to the public as soon as possible. Also, please pass the information on to any organization that may have like information. Additionally, any current emergency information or pet shelter opening can be e-mailed to us as it happens so we can post it immediately.
This is a "work in progress", so as we continue to grow we hope to be able to offer more and more information.
Thank you for your help with this project, and please feel free to comment and offer suggestions! Hopefully this information will help save many lives.
